Sword-wielding Sikhs clash at India’s Golden Temple

At least twelve people have been injured in extraordinary scenes at India’s Golden Temple in northern India when rival groups of Sikhs chased each other with swords and spears.

The clashes kicked off following a disagreement over who should speak first at a memorial event. The fighting coincided with the 30th anniversary of Operation Blue Star, a military operation ordered by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to remove Sikh separatists from the Golden Temple.

Peace has now been restored, and an official said an investigation into what took place will happen.

“The clashes which took place in the premises of the Golden Temple are unfortunate and the Sikh religious body, the Shiromani Gurwara Parbandhak Committee, will take actions against those who are responsible.”

Difficult words: clash (fight), kicked off (started), separatist (a group who wants to leave something), coincide (happen at the same time), premises (building and land around it), body (organised group of people with a common function).
