This is a stunning visual representation of the packed airspace above Europe at the height of summer. The animation is a compilation of flight data from across Europe by international air traffic control operators. It shows the choreographed movements of flights above the world’s busiest airspace.
The information was gathered from radar data on June 21, 2013 and European flight plans from July 28th the same year. There are on average 30,000 flights across European airspace every day in July. These flights cover a combined distance of 25 million nautical miles.
The video features London Heathrow and London Gatwick, which is the busiest airport with only one runway in the world. On June 21, 5,675 airplanes departed or arrived from UK airports. Gatwick and Heathrow accounted for 2,295 of those flights.
Difficult words: stunning (amazing), packed (busy), compilation (set or collection), account (2,295 airplanes departed or arrived to Gatwick and Heathrow on June 21).
