Cyclist caught riding bike on busy motorway in Surrey
This cyclist ended up taking a ride along Britain’s busiest motorway after he claims an app on his phone advised him of the apparent short cut.
The man was spotted on CCTV riding on the hard shoulder of the clockwise carriageway of the M25 between junctions 10 and 11 in Tuesday morning’s rush hour. At times, he even crossed lanes.
Police and the Highways Agency used motorway cameras to keep track of the cyclist, and it was up to Sergeant Phil Dix, from Surrey Police Road’s Policing Unit, to stop him.
“He was supposedly unaware that he had committed any offence. I then made sure he was safe, put him in the back of my car, where we had further discussions about the legalities of riding your bike on the motorway. He was issued with a £50 fine for contravening a road traffic sign, and I safely helped him across the road onto the A30, where he rode home.”
Difficult words: short cut (quicker way), hard shoulder (area at the side of a road where you can stop), carriageway (one of the two sides of a motorway), rush hour (the time when the traffic is busy), supposedly (the man said it but it may not be true), contravene (to do something which is not allowed).
