Injured climber films his own escape from a Himalayan crevasse

“I’m very well f****d. I fell down a hole. Thankfully, I didn’t keep falling that way. I got trapped here instead, on this ledge. My arm, I can’t use.”

An American climber who fell into a crevasse during an expedition on a Himalayan mountain managed to crawl out alive, using only an ice axe.

John All, who filmed his struggle while inside the 22-metre hole, said he thought he was going to die after breaking his arm and five ribs.

“So, I can’t get out this way. It’s too soft. I can’t talk because I have a broken rib, I think. Or my chest is filling with blood or something. So I fell all the way down there. I’ve crawled out through here.”

It took him six hours to crawl out of the gap and another three to reach his tent, where he spent the night before rescuers reached him the next day.

“So I’m gonna have to crawl through there. Try and climb out, out through this thing. Hopefully, I can get out. Oh, I f****d hurt bad. But I gotta get out.”

John, who is an associate geography professor at Western Kentucky University, was climbing the mountain in Nepal, as part of a research project.

“F***, I just gotta get a little further. I can do it.”

Difficult words: ledge (flat piece of rock on the side of a mountain), crevasse (deep open crack in thick ice), associate professor (professor at a lower level).
